Elektrowerk Mündersbach was founded in 1957 by Edmund Szczesny. The company started off by developing and producing electronic components.

The company begins developing and producing selenium rectifiers for welding technology, electroplating and charging technology, and obtains a patent for its “protected rectifiers” (e.g. for welding machines used in shipyards).

The electric properties and service life of selenium rectifiers depend largely on the manufacturing process. At EWM, rectifiers are manufactured using state-of-the-art facilities – this ensures the highest degree of operating safety and a long service life.

The innovated protected rectifier was a basic idea of EWM – the rectifier could be used anywhere and was even resistant to sea air. This process was patented by EWM.

Bernd Szczesny began his apprenticeship as a high-voltage electrician at his father's company in 1960. After successfully completing his internship, he continued his education and pursued a degree in electrical engineering.

Angelika Szczesny-Kluge joins Elektrowerk Mündersbach GmbH and is responsible for payroll accounting. She also took on responsibility for all issues, from purchasing and marketing to sales, to support the family business.

Michael Szczesny followed in his brother's footsteps in 1968, beginning his own apprenticeship as a high-voltage electrician at the family business. He then decided to study electrical engineering to further expand his specialist knowledge.

Bernd Szczesny, the son of the founder, takes control of the company.

Electronics production begins and development/sales of digital components for fitting industrial controls starts (predecessor for today’s programmable logic controller PLC). Production of silicon rectifiers as a replacement for selenium rectifiers begins.

Selenium semiconductor production ceases as Edmund Szczesny goes into retirement in 1974. Production of controlled line-commutated, thyristor-based silicon rectifiers for welding technology and electroplating begins in 1976.

The founder’s son, Michael Szczesny, assists with executive management. He now manages the company with his brother, Bernd.

Development of self-commutated secondary-cycled power converters based on transistors and related electronics for welding machines begins.

At the start of the 80s, EWM asserts itself as a semiconductor producer for electroplating and battery-charging technology. It also supplied the related electronics.

Susanne Szczesny-Oßing, daughter of Bernd Szczesny, begins training as an industrial manager in the company as part of her dual studies in business administration. She then goes on to study marketing communications alongside her work and qualifies as a communications specialist.

EWM takes on a customer’s challenge and builds the world’s largest rectifier arc thyristor power converter cabinet to date. It had 15 megawatts and 50,000 amperes and served as a DC supply for a steel melting oven.

In-house silicon semiconductor manufacture begins with diffusion and chip production.

Manufacture of thyristors and diodes begins. The business area is reinforced and develops to become the go-to component supplier for these products for reputable European welding machine manufacturers.

Stefan Szczesny, the son of Bernd Szczesny, joins the company.

Michael Bersch starts as an assistant to the management in 1987, focussing on finance as he does today.

EWM launches the world’s first inverter for tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding machines with AC/DC technology onto the market.

Wiebke Szczesny-Bersch enters the finance department to mark the start of her professional career. She has held the position of finance director since the company became a stock corporation in 2013.

The introduction of the EWM coldArc® welding process is a milestone for the Mündersbach-based technology leader. The heat-reduced, low-spatter short arc offers high dimensional stability when welding and brazing, as well as excellent gap bridging capabilities when root welding.

Susanne Szczesny-Oßing joins the company management.

EWM China becomes a 100% subsidiary.

The production and sales site at Kunshan in the province of Jiansu in east China exclusively manufactures components and machines for the Asian market, under German production and quality standards. In 2009, the Chinese branch is licensed by the German Association for Welding (DVS) as a training centre for educating expert welding technicians under uniform quality standards.

EWM’s own MIG/MAG MT welding torch series is introduced to the market. As the gas- and water-cooled MT welding torches are harmonised with all other EWM components, the full performance capability of the power sources goes into the welding process. The MT series contains standard and function torches as well as function torches with X technology.

Opening the new sales and service centre in the northeast of England (Morpeth, Northumberland) represents EWM’s clear objective to become a major player in this market. In addition to servicing, the branch also offers consulting, training and sale of EWM welding and retail products.

The company rebrands: EWM reveals a new corporate design, new logo, modern image and new machine colours.

The alpha Q machine series is introduced to the market: modular, crane-liftable and stackable multiprocess MIG/MAG pulse welding machines with front control, and of course, the highest effectiveness. New technology is introduced with the modular forceTig machine series which, thanks to its patented TIG welding process, forceTig®, impresses with an extremely concentrated arc for more penetration and higher welding speeds.

The company changes legal form: EWM HIGHTEC WELDING GmbH becomes a 100% family-owned stock corporation.

Production starts on the EWM tigSpeed system for increased productivity and perfect results, even with positional welding. tigSpeed is a further development of the TIG cold and hot wire welding processes. Continuous wire feeding is superimposed by a forward/backward wire motion. This offers an extremely stable welding process with a high deposition rate.

EWM’s MULTIMATRIX® technology is introduced to the market, marking another technological milestone for EWM in a new dimension of welding. MULTIMATRIX® is the solution for all welding tasks and has the guiding motto “Perfection is the principle”. MULTIMATRIX® technology makes it possible to adapt to all new developments or welding tasks quickly through data exchange via a USB flash drive or LAN/WiFi network.

Development and production of digitally networked welding systems in order to meet the modern manufacturing demands of Industry 4.0.

“Welding 4.0” – EWM presents its key responses to the urgent challenge of Industry 4.0 for the welding industry. The new multiprocess MIG/MAG welding machine series, Titan XQ puls, has comprehensive digital networking capabilities and can therefore unlock significant untapped savings potential throughout the entire process chain.

Newly developed PM welding torches are introduced to the market in four different models as further innovations of the new multiprocess MIG/MAG welding machine series.

EWM introduces the revolutionary Titan XQ AC machine series to the market. The new acArc puls XQ alternating current welding process improves both manual and automated welding, even when it comes to extremely thin sheets. In fact, the weld seam is as pure as a diamond.

The new administration building opens. A modern, four-storey office complex for 80 employees is built on an 1,800-m² plot.

Construction on the new 3,000-m² production and logistics hall begins. The high-bay warehouse and production area is opened and commissioned at the start of 2020.

Bernd Szczesny passes away suddenly. The Executive Board is reshuffled – Susanne Szczesny-Oßing takes over as President of the Executive Board and Angelika Szczesny-Kluge moves to the role of Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board.

The TIG XQ series is complemented by machines in higher power classes making welding from 230 A to 600 A possible. The customisable machines are available as DC or AC/DC variants. They are more digital, universal and personal and boast increased efficiency, durability, high duty cycles and a user-friendly design with lots of clever little details.

"React" stands for "Reversing actively controlled transfer" and describes the reversing wire movement of the MIG/MAG process for automation. The process combines the advantages of a digitally controlled short arc with dynamic wire movement, while offering maximum process stability and spatter-free droplet transfer at significantly increased welding speeds.
